Visitors to iconic Angkor Wat look set to soar after AirAsia unveiled a daily flight between Siem Reap and Bangkok.

The news comes at the same time it is revealed the temple complex generated $51 million in revenue last year from the 1.8 million tickets sold.

Of those, about one million visitors bought single passes for $20, about 700,000 bought three-day passes for $40 and a further 18,000 spent $60 on week passes.

The additional route, which will fly on top of other airlines that connect the two cities, is expected to boost this visitor figure further.

And the budget airline is offering travellers wanting to fly between the two destinations a promotional price of 79THB ($2.5) one way, not including airport taxes and fees.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said: “This year, AirAsia is focusing on the Indochina market as it heads toward the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community. We’ve been on the lookout for new routes and saw Siem Reap as a destination that would enhance our network.”

The new route will start from Oct. 1 and Siem Reap will be the airline’s sixth stop in Indochina. AirAsia already flies direct from Bangkok to Phnom Penh.

“Siem Reap is a dream destination. It’s the location of Angkor Wat, which is both a beautiful World Wonder and a World Heritage Site. On top of its historical value, art and entertainment enthusiasts can’t miss the Angkor Night Market and Pub Street.

“With our opening promotion, everyone can have a once in a lifetime experience at Siem Reap,” added Santisuk Klongchaiya, Director of Commercial for Thai AirAsia.

Indochina is AirAsia’s second largest market after China. It operates 70 flights a week in the region among its 250 weekly flights.

Passenger figures for the area rose 35 per cent during the first and second quarters of this year compared to the same period the previous year.

The airline has plans to launch more destinations in the Indochina region this year.
