Eurocham Cambodia held Friday another edition of its prestigious tax forum in Siem Reap, an event that allowed members of the private sector to hear directly from the nation’s top tax officials.

The event counted with the support and participation of the General Department of Taxation (GDT), including an opening speech by Kong Vibol, GDT’ director, who said that tax collection has increased markedly in the last year thanks to reforms to the tax collection system.

Meanwhile, Eng Ratana, director of the Department of Large Taxpayers, stressed that the key to keep expanding tax revenue is to increase public awareness.

“Our strategy to expand the number of taxpayers is two-pronged. On the one hand, we seek to expand public awareness of taxation. On the other, we are conducting a nation-wide survey to locate firms that are not complying and get them to register with the GDT,” he said.

Chhiv Kimsroy, chairwoman of Eurocham’s Tax Committee, said the forum serves a great platform to connect taxpayers and government official to help clarify key aspects of taxation in Cambodia.

“When there is good communication between taxpayers and the GDT, many issues related to tax payment and tax declaration can be solved, and eventually we will create a culture of tax payment in the Kingdom,” she said.
