Tourism authorities are expecting the numbers of visitors to Cambodia to hit 5 million by the end of this year.

The first nine months of 2016 have seen around a 5% increase in tourists visiting Cambodia compared to the same period the previous year, according to a report published by government news agency Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP).

Tourism Ministry secretary of state Tith Chantha was quoted by the AKP as saying that 3.7 million foreigners have travelled to the Kingdom between January and September, with a total of five million expected by the end of the year. An article in the Khmer Times on Tuesday stated that the tourism sector has helped create jobs for 600,000 Cambodians.

“The increase in tourist numbers is also due to the availability of more direct flights to Cambodia,” Ho Vandy, secretary general of the newly-founded National Tourism Federation of Cambodia, told the Khmer Times.

The Ministry has set a goal of drawing 7.5 million international tourists per year by 2020, and is said to be developing a new marketing strategy accordingly.
