Metfone’s lead at the top of Cambodia’s mobile operator market is under threat from second placed Smart Axiata, according to the latest subscriber figures filed to the Telecommunications Regulator of Cambodia (TRC).
TRC spokesman Im Vutha said that, out of 19.1 million active subscribers in Cambodia as of the end of June, Vietnamese-owned Metfone accounted for 8.9 million, while Smart had 7.4 million and Royal Group-owned Cellcard were third with 2.4 million. Mobile operators qb, Seatel, and Xinwei totaled 400,000 subscribers between them.
Vutha noted that Metfone still dominated statistics for the traditional voice calls, but had been left in the dust by Smart when it came to the more lucrative data service.
Figures from Axiata, the Malaysian parent company of Smart, claimed they had more than 3 million data subscribers last year, nearly double that of Metfone’s estimated tally and bettering Cellcard by a factor of five.
