Thousands Attend 2017 River Festival In Stung Treng Province

The government’s three-day River Festival in Stung Treng province that ended on Sunday attracted a total of around 140,000 local and international tourists, the Ministry of Tourism announced yesterday.
“Around 60,000 tourists attended the last day of the celebrations and the total number for the three days was 140,000,” said Tourism Minister Thong Khon. “The tourists were both local and foreign.” The government’s third annual River Festival is part of a strategy to attract eco-tourism investment to provinces in the northeast of the country, officials have said.
“The River Festival is not only about attracting local and foreign tourists, but also showcasing the potential for investment opportunities,” said Kong Sophearak, director of the statistics department at the Ministry of Tourism. “We recognise the northeast is yet to develop fully functioning services in terms of accommodation and restaurants, but that makes it a good opportunity for investors,” he added. The first River Festival was held in Kampong Cham and the second was in Kratie.
