The Cambodia-China University of Technology and Science, known as CamTech, was officially inaugurated aiming to offer individuals in Cambodia access to high-quality tertiary education in the fields of science and technology.
The inauguration ceremony took place on December 20, 2023 and was attended by Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, and Sports, and Dr. Wu Yan, Deputy Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China.
The idea for CamTech University was initiated in 2019 by Neak Okhna Pong Kheav Se, a prominent business figure in Cambodia, and Chairman of the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC). The establishment of the university is a result of collaboration between the Federation of Khmer Chinese in Cambodia and Nanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
CamTech stated in its press release that, “the official inauguration is not only a symbol of progress and cooperation in the field of higher education, but also a demonstration of the joint efforts of Cambodia and China to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the people of the two countries, as well as building a future for the entire Asia-Pacific region”.
“This university is another new achievement of Cambodia-China cooperation for human resources development, and is a strong testament to people-to-people contact between Cambodia and China,” said Dr. Hang Chuon Naron at the inauguration ceremony.
“I believe that this university will be a sacred place that can change the destiny of students and make every student’s dream come true,” he added.
Bolstering Human Resource Development In Cambodia
Improving the quality of higher education in science and technology is an important strategy for human resource development in Cambodia, contributing to the country’s goal of becoming an upper middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050. Naron confirmed that there are currently 132 higher education institutions in the Kingdom, a significant increase from only eight in 1997.
Commenting on the new campus, Rith Sovandalin, a 20-year-old data science student, said, “The school is equipped with an experimental lab and provides majors in modern technologies, which are most needed in Cambodia’s job market.”
She added that there are not many existing data scientists in Cambodia, therefore, she hopes to be a valuable talent for her country in this field once she graduates.
Located in the Chroy Changvar Satellite City in Phnom Penh, the university’s campus includes a main academic building, modern facilities, and an advanced experimental lab.
